When Korean War veteran Augustus M. Churchill was voted out of his sheriff's seat a dozen or so years ago, he set up shop as a private investigator in his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts. He loves New England, plays cribbage, drinks Sam Adams, gives his "Gone Fishing" sign plenty of hang time, and, when prodded, advances the cause of justice with the help of his elusive romantic interest, Happy Fremont. For this small-town PI, life is good. But when a young woman gets herself into a small jam with the law, Churchill agrees to gather evidence on her behalf. The routine investigation, however, unfolds into blackmail, double-cross, and savage murders that send his client packing. Now, the savvy PI finds himself unraveling a complicated scheme reeking of highbrow blood, local politics, and scandal-laden real estate deeds. Fatal Deeds is an original and intricate suspense novel, laced with history, romance, local color, and humor. Best-selling author Andrew McAleer spins a genuine mystery - reminiscent in plot and character of the best of the Golden Age of Mystery.

Mr. McAleer has written several mystery books ~ all of which are worthy of reading. However, this particular character is one which I am hoping Mr. McAleer will consider developing additional adventures for.

"Gus" is a man who knows who he is, has the age of someone who has lived life, maintains his sense of humor (works well with this murder mystery), and the critical mind it takes to solve mysteries. What I found so intriguing about this book is that, as a reader, I came to know "Gus" and love him. His Girl Friday plays an important role in the story and keeps Gus on the straight and narrow. The best mysteries are the kind that make you believe you are a "fly on the wall" as the events are taking place. This book did that for me.

The plot was well developed. There were enough clues that if the reader was REALLY paying attention may have been to figure it out. Between the repetoire among the characters and the bits of Concord history dispersed throughout the book, along with trying to figure out "whodunit" it certainly held my attention. One of those books that you can't wait to get back to because you want to find out what is going on. Although this story takes place in the 1990's it is easy to picture a 1940's gumshoe and gum smacking secretary with the beehive updo.

I seriously hope Mr. McAleer continues with this wonderful, loveable character - it would be an injustice not continue these adventures with Gus and crew!

McAleer hit a four bagger murder-mystery. Invest in this novel. It's mind food.
Having read other of McAleer's novels, I thought I knew what to expect form Fatal Deeds. I was mistaken. Although his other mysteries were good, McAleer has really graduated to that next level with his latest work. Fatal Deeds was so well developed and so well synthesized, it kept me wanting to read more and more. The development of the characters, the visualization of the environs were masterfully incorporated into this book, which brought you into the story. The mystery itself was complex, but unwound by P.I. Gus Churchill in a way that only a seasoned pro could. He does all of this with a bit of witty humor infused. I enjoyed this book very much and found myself reading those few extra pages each day to try to get a bit more info to help me unlock the mystery. This story would make a great movie. This book will not disappoint.
Great Read.
Gus Churchill arrives on the Mystery novel scene as an over the hill PI but one gets the feeling we will see him in a number of future novels. Andrew McAleer treats the reader to snappy dialogue, a quick moving solid plot, a journey through the streets of well preserved pure New England Americana, and a "Bucket List" of places to eat! Oh and you may feel like adopting a pet when all is said and done too!
What a delightful book. It harkens back to the 30s and 40s pot boilers. It has snappy dialog, rich characters and the story moves swiftly. What I particularly loved was the gathering of all the suspects in the parlor (in this case Gus' PI office) wherein our hero unravels the mystery and fingers the culprit. It was Charlie Chan & Inspector Clouseau at their finest moment. Very well done!
I truly enjoyed the characters in this murder mystery. The author has a talent for writing, looking forward to reading his other works.
Andrew McAleer's "Fatal Deeds" is another snappy mystery from the author of "Bait and Switch" and "Mystery Writing in a Nutshell". Gus Churchill is an over the hill, former sheriff turned PI. But he's still got all the spark and zing of his younger days. I liked Gus and liking the main character is half the battle in a PI novel. I also enjoyed the New England setting and learning little tidbits about Concord, Mass. What a great location in which to set a mystery novel as it's surrounded by so much history and evidence of the American Revolution. And I like novels that give me a feel for the local color, and things I might not have known and that you don't quite get in the history books, well as going along for the plot ride.

The story opens when a young woman comes into Gus' office. She's in trouble for holding a shotgun on her boss who stiffed her a payment. And that's just the beginning of Gus' wild ride.

The plot moves along at a quick pace and has humor and characters you want to spend more time with. Who could ask for more?
